What Is a Batch Coding Machine?

A batch coding machine prints variable data on labels or packaging. Variable data is the information that changes from batch to batch or day to day: manufacturing and expiry dates, batch and lot numbers, MRP, serial numbers, barcodes and QR codes. The printed artwork on the label stays the same. The batch coding machine adds the changing part.

For label rolls the coding is done roll to roll. A pre-printed label roll unwinds, passes a coding head that prints the data on each label, and rewinds as a coded roll ready for the labelling machine. The coding head itself is an online coder, either CIJ (continuous inkjet) or TIJ (thermal inkjet), fitted on the machine.

RK's Roll To Roll Batch Coding Machine is built for this. It provides the unwinding, the web control, the flat coding space and the constant speed rewinding, and accepts either coder type. For plants that also inspect and slit their rolls, the RK HSI-320 does coding and slitting in one pass.

The Roll To Roll Batch Coding Rewinding Machine takes label rolls up to 300 mm wide. The unwinding unit holds a roll up to 500 mm with a web control unit, and the winding unit takes a roll up to 500 mm with a nip roller attachment for constant speed winding. Between them is a flat 500 mm space for the batch coding attachment, where a CIJ or TIJ online coder is fitted. RK can supply and fit the coder, or the customer can fit their own. A 1 HP DC variable speed control motor drives the machine, so the speed can be matched to the coder and the job. It suits any plant that receives pre-printed label rolls and needs to add MRP, batch number and dates before labelling.

Slitting With Batch Coding Machine (RK HSI-320)

The RK HSI-320 is a sticker label inspection and slitting machine with batch coding and missing label detection, for a maximum paper width of 320 mm. It has a 24 inch top side inspection table and a 24 inch bottom table for fixing the batch coding unit, missing label detection for single and double ups on die cut labels with a gap, and positioning of the missing label at the inspection table. The coding unit is not supplied with the HSI-320; the customer fits their own, or RK can fit one at extra charge. Slitting is by both rotary and shear blades with an air blower for waste trimming. The unwind takes a 600 mm roll with an imported ultrasonic web guide, and the up and down rewinding unit takes 300 mm rolls on 1 inch, 1.5 inch or 3 inch cores selected on the touch screen. Two 1 HP variable speed motors run the nip roll and the rewinder at a mechanical speed of 100 m/min. It suits label printers who want to inspect, code and slit in one pass.

04 — How It Works

How Does a Batch Coding Machine Work?

The pre-printed label roll is loaded on the unwinding unit. On the Roll To Roll Batch Coding Machine the web control unit keeps the roll aligned as it unwinds. On the HSI-320 the ultrasonic web guide does the same.

The web moves across the flat coding space, where the CIJ or TIJ coder prints the batch data, the MRP, the dates and any barcode or QR code onto each label. On the HSI-320 the web first passes the 24 inch inspection table, where the operator checks the labels and the sensor flags any missing label, and the coding unit is fixed on the bottom table.

The coded web then winds up. On the Roll To Roll machine the nip roller attachment keeps the winding speed constant so the coder output stays even. On the HSI-320 the web is slit into lanes and rewound on the up and down rewinding unit, with the counter stopping the machine at the set label count.
