Label Inspection Machine

Label Inspection Machine Manufacturer in India

A printed label roll can look perfect on the press and still carry a missing label, a colour shift or a smudge somewhere in its thousands of repeats. If that roll reaches a pharma or food customer, the whole batch comes back. A label inspection machine catches the fault before the roll leaves your factory.

RK Label Printing Machinery Pvt. Ltd. is a label inspection machine manufacturer in India, with its head office in GIDC Vatva, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, three manufacturing units and customers in 23+ countries. RK has built label printing and converting machinery since 1995.

This page covers the three machines in the RK label inspection range: the Automatic Inspection AHSI (320 mm and 450 mm models), the Label Missing Detection Machine with online slitting and rewinding (HSI-320) and the Manual Inspection machine (IS-320).

01 — What Is It

What Is a Label Inspection Machine?

A label inspection machine unwinds a printed label roll, passes it over an inspection area where faults are found, and rewinds it as a checked roll. The simplest version is a manual inspection rewinder: a table where the operator watches the web go by and stops the machine at a fault. A missing label detection machine adds a sensor that finds gaps where a die cut label has lifted off the liner. An automatic label inspection machine carries a camera based inspection system that checks the labels as the roll passes.

Two of the three RK inspection machines also slit the roll into finished widths on the same pass, so inspection, slitting and rewinding happen in one operation. That is what a label inspection machine with slitting means: the checked roll comes off the machine ready for the customer.

02 — Range

The RK Label Inspection Machine Range

01

Automatic Inspection AHSI-320 and AHSI-450

The RK AHSI is an automatic label inspection machine with slitting, in two sizes: the AHSI-320 for a paper width up to 320 mm and the AHSI-450 for up to 450 mm. RK supplies it without the inspection system, and the customer chooses the camera (2K, 4K or 8K cameras from E+L, Lucid or OK) or mounts their own. Both models have a 20 inch top inspection table, two trolley type web guides, a servo driven nip roller, a 7 inch full touch HMI and a PLC based label and meter counter with auto stop. The unwind takes a 600 mm roll on a 3 inch air shaft, the slitting unit has razor and rotary blades with a bottom cutter and an air blower for waste trimming, and the rewind is on a 3 inch air shaft, up to a 450 mm roll on the AHSI-320 and 600 mm on the AHSI-450. Speed is 100 to 150 m/min.

Label Missing Detection Machine (Online Slitting & Rewinding)

The RK HSI-320 with missing label detection is a sticker label inspection and slitting machine with a table for a batch coding unit. It has a 24 inch top inspection table, a 24 inch bottom table for fixing a batch coding unit, missing label detection for single and double ups on die cut labels with a gap, and positioning of the missing label at the inspection table. The batch coding unit is not supplied with the machine. The unwind takes a 600 mm roll with an imported ultrasonic web guide, slitting has both rotary and shear blades with an air blower for waste, the Panasonic label counting sensor counts labels, and the up and down rewind takes 300 mm rolls on 1, 1.5 or 3 inch cores selected on the touch screen, in forward or reverse direction. The paper width is 320 mm.

03 — Key Features

Key Features of RK Label Inspection Machines

Optional Camera Inspection

The AHSI is supplied without the inspection system. The customer chooses 2K, 4K or 8K cameras from E+L, Lucid or OK, or mounts their own inspection system on the facility provided.

Missing Label Detection

The HSI-320 detects missing labels for single and double ups on die cut labels with a gap, and positions the fault at the inspection table.

Inspection and Slitting in One Pass

The AHSI has online slitting with razor and rotary blades, and the HSI-320 with rotary and shear blades, each with an air blower for waste trimming, so checked rolls come off in finished widths.

Imported Ultrasonic Web Guides

Every machine in the range has an imported ultrasonic electronic web guide on the unwinding side; the AHSI has a second web guide before the slitting unit.

Label and Meter Counting With Auto Stop

Panasonic label counting sensors on the manual and missing label machines, and PLC based label and meter counting on the automatic machine, stop the roll at the set count.

Rewinding and Core Sizes

The HSI-320 rewinds up and down on 1, 1.5 and 3 inch shafts, with core selection on its touch screen. The AHSI rewinds on a 3 inch air shaft driven by its own motor.

Batch Coding Table

The HSI-320 has a 24 inch bottom table for fixing a batch coding unit, so coding and inspection run together. The coding unit is not supplied with the machine: the customer fits their own, or RK can fit one at extra charge.

04 — How It Works

How Does a Label Inspection Machine Work?

1

The printed roll, up to 600 mm in diameter, is loaded on the unwinding unit. The ultrasonic web guide keeps the web centred and the tension controller or mechanical brake holds it steady as it moves to the inspection area.

2

On the manual machine the web passes over the 30 inch inspection table and the operator, using the foot switch, stops it at any fault. On the missing label machine a sensor checks every label position and stops the web with the gap at the inspection table. On the automatic machine the web passes the 20 inch inspection table, where the camera or inspection system chosen by the customer checks the labels.

3

After inspection the web passes the slitting unit, where razor, rotary or shear blades slit it to the finished widths and the air blower removes the trim. The label counter and meter counter track the roll and stop it at the set count, and the finished rolls wind on the rewinding unit on the chosen core size.

05 — Applications

Applications

Pharma labels - 100% checked rolls where a missing or wrong label is not acceptable.
Food and beverage labels - catching print defects before the labelling line.
Cosmetic and FMCG labels - colour and register checks on high value packaging.
Die cut label rolls - missing label detection on single and double up labels with a gap.
Slitting and rewinding - finishing printed jumbo rolls into customer widths while inspecting.
Batch coding - the HSI-320's coding table for date and batch printing during inspection.
Counted rolls - exact label counts per roll with auto stop.

06 — Materials

What Materials Can It Run?

The AHSI runs most of the materials that RK's flexo printing machines print: self-adhesive label stock, paper, BOPP, PE and PET film, foil, lami tube and blister foil, on paper widths up to 320 mm (450 mm on the AHSI-450) and unwinding rolls up to 600 mm in diameter. The HSI-320 and IS-320 work on die cut self-adhesive label rolls up to 320 mm wide, and missing label detection on the HSI-320 relies on the gap between labels. RK runs a trial on the customer's own material before almost every order, so share your materials with RK before the specification is fixed.

07 — Selection Guide

How to Choose the Right Label Inspection Machine

01What is your paper width? The standard machines take a 320 mm paper width (AHSI-320, HSI-320 and IS-320) or 450 mm (AHSI-450). If your rolls are wider or narrower, RK can make the machine for your paper width.
02What do you need to catch?Missing labels only, or print defects as well? Missing labels point to the HSI-320; print defects need the AHSI with a camera fitted.
03Manual or automatic? The IS-320 relies on the operator; the AHSI, with a camera fitted, inspects every label automatically.
04Do you slit on the same pass? The AHSI and HSI-320 slit online; the IS-320 is roll to roll inspection only.
05Do you batch code? The HSI-320 has a bottom table for fixing a batch coding unit.
06What speed do you need?100 to 150 m/min on the AHSI, 100 m/min on the HSI-320, 50 m/min mechanical speed on the manual machine.
07What core sizes and rewind diameters?450 mm rewind on the AHSI-320, 600 mm on the AHSI-450, 300 mm on the HSI-320, 600 mm on the IS-320.
08What floor space do you have? The AHSI-320 is 4.6 ft high, 4.6 ft wide and 10 ft long, and the AHSI-450 is 6 ft high, 5.6 ft wide and 10.6 ft long. The HSI-320 is 4.5 ft high, 3.3 ft wide and 7.3 ft long. The IS-320 is 3.75 ft high, 3.2 ft wide and 3.75 ft long.
